Parents who search for NAPLAN tutoring in Perth usually want one of two things. Some want their child to feel calmer about a test. Most want their child to be solid on reading, writing and number work, so that the test, and everything after it, is easier.
We built the Year 3 and 4 class for the second group. It serves the first group as a result.
This is not a cram course. The class teaches the maths and English a Year 3 or 4 student needs right now. NAPLAN checks those same skills, so a child who has the foundations right is also prepared for NAPLAN. We do not spend ten weeks drilling past papers. We spend them on the skills that make the papers make sense.
NAPLAN stands for the National Assessment Program, Literacy and Numeracy. It is run by ACARA, the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 across Australia sit it in March each year.
It covers four areas:
Reading
Writing
Conventions of language, which means spelling, grammar and punctuation
Numeracy
NAPLAN is not a pass or fail test and it is not an entry exam. Schools and education departments use it to see how students are tracking against national standards. Parents receive an individual report showing where their child sits in each area. It is a snapshot, taken every second year of school from Year 3, of skills a child has been building since they started.
A child in Year 3 or 4 now has either just sat the Year 3 test or is heading towards the Year 5 test. Either way the skills are the same, and so is the work. That is why we teach the skills rather than the test. A child who reads with understanding, writes in clear sentences and knows their number facts will show that in any snapshot.
Year 3 is the first year of NAPLAN, but that is not the main reason it matters. Year 3 is when school work changes shape.
Reading shifts from sounding out words to understanding what a passage means and why.
Writing moves from single sentences to short paragraphs with a point.
Maths moves from counting to place value, times tables and multi-step word problems.
Spelling and grammar stop being separate lessons and start being expected in every piece of work.
Children also form opinions about themselves around this age. A child who keeps up in Year 3 tends to describe themselves as good at maths or good at reading, and then acts like it. A child who finds it hard often decides the subject is not for them, before anyone has said so. Steady basics in Year 3 and 4 give a child a better story to tell themselves, and that story carries into Year 5 and beyond.
The class is for both groups. Children who are doing well get stretched. Children who need more time get it, with a tutor close enough to notice.
Each week runs for 1.5 hours and splits time between maths and English. Over the 10 week term the class works through the following.
Maths:
Place value, and addition and subtraction with larger numbers
Multiplication and division, including times tables and what they mean
Fractions in a form that makes sense to an eight or nine year old
Measurement, time, shape and simple data
Word problems, which is where most children lose marks and most of their confidence
English:
Reading comprehension: finding the answer in the text and explaining why it is the answer
Writing structure: how to open, how to build a paragraph, how to finish
Spelling patterns and the rules behind them
Grammar and punctuation, taught inside real writing rather than on worksheets
Vocabulary, because a child cannot answer a question they cannot read
Students get weekly homework to practise what was covered in class. Groups are capped at 12 so the tutor sees every child’s work every week.

Any tutor who promises a NAPLAN band or a result is guessing. Here is what preparation can and cannot do.
It can:
Make the format familiar, so test day holds no surprises.
Fix gaps in the basics that would otherwise show up in every question.
Teach a child to read the whole question before answering it.
Give a child enough practice writing to a time limit that it stops feeling strange.
It cannot:
Replace what happens in the classroom over the full year.
Turn one term of classes into a guaranteed result.
Make a child who is not yet reading fluently suddenly understand complex passages.
We are also clear about what NAPLAN is for. It is one measure among many. Your child’s teacher sees them every day and knows far more than a test can show. Use NAPLAN as information, not as a verdict.

Parents of Year 4 students sometimes ask which class to choose.
The Year 3 and 4 class is about foundations. It suits a child who needs the basics steady, or who is doing fine and would benefit from a small group and regular practice.
The GATE and ASET small group class is for Year 4 and 5 students preparing for the Academic Selective Entrance Test. That is the exam for Year 7 entry into a WA selective school program. It runs for 2 hours a week and covers abstract reasoning, quantitative reasoning, reading comprehension and written expression. Read more on GATE tutoring in Perth and what the ASET exam is.
