The exam most Perth parents still call the GATE test is now formally the Academic Selective Entrance Test, the ASET. It is one exam with two names, and the difference between GATE and ASET is only the label. Students sit it in March, for Year 7 entry into a WA selective high school gifted and talented program.

What the test looks like:

Four sections: abstract reasoning, quantitative reasoning, reading comprehension and written expression.

Selection is highly competitive. Each academic program has a set number of Year 7 places, and Perth Modern School offers up to 225, across selective schools in WA.

Abstract reasoning is rarely taught in primary school. Most children meet these question types for the first time in the test unless someone shows them beforehand.

Timing is tight in every section. A child who knows the content but has never worked under the clock leaves marks on the table.

Our classes take Year 4 and Year 5 students. Starting in Year 4 gives a child two relaxed years to build the reasoning habits the test rewards. Starting in Year 5 still leaves enough time, but the pace is firmer. For the full breakdown of each section, read our guide to the ASET exam and the GATE test format. For registration windows and test timing, see GATE exam dates in WA.

How our GATE classes in Perth work

How our GATE classes in Perth work

How our GATE classes in Perth work

Each class runs for 2 hours a week across a 10 week term. Groups are small on purpose, and every class has two tutors in the room.

Average ratio of 5 students to 1 tutor. Two tutors in every class, so no child waits long for help.

Every GATE class is led personally by Sagar, with a support tutor working alongside him.

Work covers all four sections of the test, including the written expression section that most families find hardest to practise at home.

Weekly homework, set and marked, so the two hours in class carry through the week.

One full practice exam included in the term, sat under timed conditions.

Access to our personalised learning platform, where students practise between classes.

The classes are for children who are capable and curious, not only for those already at the top of their class. Parents often tell us their child is strong at school but has never seen an abstract reasoning question. That is the normal starting point, not a problem.

What we do not do is drill children through endless past papers with no explanation. Each question type gets a method first, then practice, then a timed run. A child who understands why an answer is right can handle a question they have never seen, which is what the test is designed to throw at them.

Where each option fits, in our honest view:

A small group suits most children who are on track at school and need structure, exam practice and a tutor who marks their writing. It is the best value per hour of contact time.

A private tutor suits a child who is well behind or well ahead of their year, or a family whose weekends cannot hold a fixed slot.

Self-paced online suits a self-motivated child with a parent who has the time to sit alongside them. It works less well for written expression, where feedback from a person matters most.

Mixing is fine. A group class for structure, with a private session or two if one section lags, is a sensible plan.

Whichever option you pick, ask who marks the written work and how quickly it comes back. That single answer tells you more than any brochure.

For a deeper look at the first two, read our guide to group versus private GATE tutoring. If you are comparing tutors, how to choose a GATE tutor lists the questions worth asking any provider, including us.

10 years teaching this exam, and 500+ students tutored.

State champion debater and national public speaking winner, which shows in how he teaches written expression.

National and international merit scholarships, including the John Curtin Undergraduate Scholarship and the Georgia Rotary Student Program Award.

Hundreds of students over the last ten years have gone on to selective school programs.

If you are not ready to enrol, there are two free steps that cost nothing but an hour.

Download the free sample ASET questions. Sit your child down with a timer and see which sections feel natural and which feel foreign. Abstract reasoning is usually the one that surprises.

Register for the next free GATE mock exam in Perth. We run these at Curtin University under real test conditions, and your child receives marked results.

Work through more GATE practice questions by section if you want to see how each question type is built.

What to look for when your child sits the sample paper:

If they move through the abstract reasoning questions comfortably, they may only need timed practice and a mock exam.

If they stall on the first few and start guessing, a term of classes will give them a method instead of a coin toss.

If the writing task takes twice the time it should, that is the section a tutor can lift fastest.

Neither step commits you to anything. Do the sample paper first, come to a mock, and then decide whether a term of classes is worth it.
