Term 4 2026 is a 10 week term. Saturday classes start on 17 October, Sunday classes on 18 October.

Every class runs for 2 hours.

Average ratio of 5 students to 1 tutor, with two tutors in the room.

Every class is led personally by Sagar Badve, with a support tutor alongside him.

The exam these classes prepare for is the Academic Selective Entrance Test, the ASET, which most Perth parents still call the GATE test. It is sat in March of Year 6 for Year 7 entry to WA selective programs. Our guide to the GATE exam in WA explains the four sub-tests and how offers are made.

Why families south of the river choose Leeming

Why families south of the river choose Leeming

Why families south of the river choose Leeming

The honest reason is distance and the day of the week. Our only other GATE class is on a Friday afternoon at Perth Modern School, north of the river. For a family in the southern suburbs, a 4:30pm Friday start after school pickup is hard to hold for 10 weeks in a row. Leeming gives that family four weekend options instead.

A morning slot means the child arrives fresh, not at the end of a school day.

Four slots across two days leave room for Saturday sport, weekend work or a sibling’s commitments.

A school campus with proper classrooms, not a shopfront.

The same term, price, homework and practice exam as the Friday class, so nothing is lost by choosing the weekend.

If you have searched for GATE tutoring near you and you live south of the river, this is the venue to look at first. For everything we run across Perth, see GATE tutoring in Perth.

Weekend or Friday: which slot suits your child

Weekend or Friday: which slot suits your child

The choice is about your family’s week, not the class. Both venues teach the same program.

A weekend slot at Leeming tends to suit:

Families south of the river who would otherwise cross the city on a Friday afternoon.

Children who are flat by Friday afternoon and work better in the morning.

Families with a Year 3 or 4 sibling, because those classes run at Leeming in the same weekend windows.

The Friday class at Perth Modern tends to suit:

Families north of the river, or close to the city.

Families whose weekends are already full.

Children aiming at Perth Modern who respond to preparing in the school itself.

If you still cannot decide, pick the slot your family can hold for all 10 weeks. A child who attends every week gains more than one who misses two Saturdays for sport.

What happens in a two hour GATE class

What happens in a two hour GATE class

What happens in a two hour GATE class

Two hours sounds long for a nine or ten year old. It is not, because the class moves between question types and between modes: taught, practised, timed.

Each week takes a question type from one of the four sub-tests: Reading Comprehension, Communicating Ideas in Writing, Quantitative Reasoning or Abstract Reasoning. The method comes first.

Two tutors in the room means one teaches while the other works with a child who is stuck. With an average of 5 students to 1 tutor, nobody waits long.

Writing is done by hand to a prompt, as in the real test, and marked by a person. Handwriting, spelling and punctuation have little impact on the real score if the work is readable, so feedback goes to ideas and structure.

Children are taught to answer every multiple choice question. Nothing is deducted for a wrong answer in the ASET, so a blank is never the better choice.

Homework is set each week and marked. Between classes, GATE students use the ELG learning platform, which carries more GATE practice questions by section.

One full practice exam is sat during the term under timed conditions. For a second look at how your child performs under pressure, register for a free GATE mock exam in Perth, which we run at Curtin University.

Leeming SHS also hosts our Year 3 and 4 NAPLAN, maths and English foundations classes. They are 1.5 hours a week with a maximum of 12 students, at their own times:

Saturday 9:30am to 11:00am

Saturday 11:30am to 1:00pm

Sunday 9:30am to 11:00am

Sunday 11:30am to 1:00pm

Each of these sits inside a GATE session window, so a family with a Year 3 child and a Year 5 child can drop both at 9:00am or 11:30am and make one trip. These classes include weekly homework but not the learning platform. Details are on the NAPLAN tutoring in Perth page.

He stopped guessing and started having a method.
